Client in the Spotlight: Worldwide FX UK

At Office Freedom, we continue to innovate the way businesses look for flexible workspace. Every month, we shine the spotlight on some of the companies we’ve helped find the perfect office. Today, we are focusing on Worldwide FX UK who work in the film industry and specialise in creating creatures, top-notch visual effects or anything your imagination can come up with.

Over the years, NuBoyana film studios who are the mother ship to Worldwide FX UK have serviced hundreds of featured films including the likes of Rambo V, Angel Has Fallen, Rise of An Empire and The Expendables 1,2 and 3. Matt O’Sullivan is one of the heads of Worldwide FX UK, who’s focus is on the overall production of incoming shows and the operation of the facility. Matt O'sullivan contacted Office Freedom looking for an office space to accommodate their growing team. With the help of our Director of Corporate Solutions David Garson, he ended up finding the perfect space, in Whitechapel.

We caught up with Matt to find out how his team are settling into their new space.

Hi Matt! Why did WWFX UK decide to search for a new HQ in 2018?

We were previously located in Kings Cross where our office space just wasn’t great for staff, also prices were on the increase, so we decided to relocate. We went through a lot of different websites which is the best way to reach out and then came across Office Freedom and were put in touch with David Garson. David took me to 25+ locations in Central London, he showed me tonnes of different offices and he had a lot of great connections which he’s built up over time which was great. He just made the whole process smooth and the transition was great. What’s tough is representing both sides, the buyer and seller, and I never felt he was in one direction; he stayed professional throughout and really did get an amazing deal for our company.

What prompted Worldwide FX UK to relocate to Whitechapel?

A few reasons; but mainly to do with budget. We got an amazing deal for this workspace in this location. The office space provider X+Why had a real desire to ensure we had a great deal and they weren’t a traditional provider looking to pull you in and tie you down to a long-term contract. Rupert and Phil, the main operators of the X+Why group had a good vision and great design layout provided by Imago interiors for the building which I liked. Also, as we discussed earlier, there’s a lot more for staff and I think nowadays, people want to come into work and for it be a home from home. I think having the facilities like the bathrooms, kitchens, breakout spaces, even if it’s just an open plan space with coworking, it just stands out. I like their vision and brand.

How do you find the area?

The area is cool. One of the main reasons for moving into the area was that Crossrail is going in at Whitechapel, so that will connect you from Paddington to Whitechapel within 15 minutes. We also came here because a lot of our staff live out in East London and again, that’s important. Also, you’re close to Brick Lane which is perfect for food, there are some nice Turkish restaurants around. You’re surrounded by variety, which is nice. With Liverpool Street and Shoreditch just down the road, the networking opportunities for us are endless.

What are the best features you and your team love about this space?

We worked with a fantastic interior designer Sophie, who really brought the overall design to the next level. The actual layout and being able to create a design based on important aspects is fantastic. I think what it’s going to become is really rewarding - to have a nice breakout area, agile space, kitchen, Yoga area, Coffee shop provided an opportunity to give back to the team. With the new design, we have our logo and branding colours on the walls providing our own identity which is amazing.

What’s next for Worldwide FX? Is there anything exciting in the pipeline?

We’re here because we want to push quality and challenge the bigger companies in London. One of the main areas we are pushing to work more on is creature work as it’s unique, interesting, bespoke and notably difficult to do. We have some exciting projects on the horizon, for now we will have to keep these a secret however our main focus has been on Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen coming out this year April 12^th. We are over the moon with the quality we put out, all credit to the fantastic team who put in a great deal of hard work throughout the year. Regarding the next steps for the UK team, we are trying to grow our team and further build our pipeline to help improve quality and push the boundaries within the industry, watch this space!
