The Coworking Diaries #12 - Stillpoint Spaces

If you value calm as much as collaboration and have a professional interest in how the mind works, this space in Clerkenwell could be just what you’re looking for. We take a look inside...

It’s not every day that I’m lucky enough to visit a workspace that is truly unique in terms of design, atmosphere and overall offering. Stillpoint Spaces is, quite frankly, one of those places; the organisation aims to facilitate collaboration, discussion and innovation in the field of psychology. Yes it’s niche, but it’s certainly not exclusionary - people from all disciplines are welcomed, from writers and linguists to tech developers and entrepreneurs - as long as their work takes an interest in an aspect of psychology.

“Exploring psychology in depth, inside and outside the consulting room.”

Design elements like colour are used to evoke feelings of calm and optimism, leading to greater productivity.

Stillpoint Spaces London is comprised of two types of flexible workspace: consultation rooms on the first floor and coworking space on the second. The former are designed with client wellbeing and comfort in mind. The rooms are appropriately small yet layout and lighting combine to create a sense of spaciousness; they provide privacy and don't overlook other offices so as not to distract. On the first floor, panoramic windows let in an abundance of natural light. Workstations facing outwards allow for independent, meditative work whilst the room's centrepiece - a large bench desk in the middle - is perfect for collaborative endeavours.

"We are building a community of like-minded individuals."

Stillpoint is innovating the way in which aspects of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, psychology and and related fields can be combined and applied to everyday life, including in the workplace, through deep learning sessions and other methods.

With locations in London, Berlin and Zürich, and one opening in Paris very soon, Stillpoint's philosophy is proving popular - so much so that they also operate not only internationally, but through an online platform that is used to host a diverse program of events, including everything from webinars with thought leaders to group meditations. Members of Stillpoint Spaces are encouraged to use all of the operator's locations should they want to, including the online resource. Non-members are welcome to come along to events.

Stillpoint Spaces

SPS London is a workspace, library and gallery by day, and a thriving event space by evening. Since opening in March 2017, the centre has been facilitating an ongoing conversation between the oft-divided worlds of Psychology and the Arts, with a whole range of events and engagements throughout the Autumn season. The first to exhibit was Robert Downes, artist, psychotherapist and friend of SPS. You can find out more about the exhibition and Downes' work in his interview with Kate Holford.

"Members become part of a community that seeks to apply psychological thinking to their work."

A plethora of thought-provoking events have already been scheduled for 2018. In fact, Aaron Balick, SPS London's Director, will be launching his new publication, The Little Book of Calm at the space in the new year.
